Do you find yourself staring with envy of someone having amazing big curls with their long hair? Ever wondered how to do it by yourself and make it last more than 30 minutes? I’m here to give you a helping hand – see how easy it can be.
When you feel like experimenting with your looks
Having long hair certainly gives you plenty of scope to experiment with your looks. There are so many ways via which one can style their long hair. There are ample choices in terms of styling and hairdos. Monotony in your looks is not a problem that one has to deal with if they have long hair. However, not many people realize the problems that are associated with styling long hair. Quite a bit of time goes into the process due to the length of the hair. Having somewhat long hair myself, I can imagine the tedious nature of the task of curling your hair in such situations.
Curled hair works well with quite a few looks. It complements your appearance in a beautiful manner. When you have long hair, you do not have to focus only on making the perfect curls. You also have to pay an adequate amount of attention to ensuring that the curls are long lasting. Luckily, there are a couple of ways via which you can attain long-lasting curls on long hair. If you are wondering how to curl long hair, you are about to learn a couple of tried and tested ways to do so. You would not be disappointed with the result.
How to go about it
Having long hair can be troublesome if you are looking to have the perfect curls. When you think about how to curl long hair, there are actually two ways to go about it: one is by making use of an iron curler and the other is a more natural route. We are going to discuss both extensively so that you can select the one you find more suitable for your style.
Using the curler
With the help of these instructions, you would be able to attain loose and bouncy curls for your long hair that would last for quite a bit of time. Before getting started, make sure you have the required supplies on hand. You are going to need a large curling iron( in case you don’t have one I have reviewed quite a lot of them on my site, take your pick 😉 ), plenty of hair clips, hairspray, hair mousse, and a comb.
If you want the perfect result, you should get started when your hair is in its natural state. Do not use a conditioner after washing as it makes the hair way too light, making it difficult for the curls to stay intact. You can make use of a mousse to tighten your hair a bit. Be generous in using it.
Use a comb and your hands to lift the top and middle layer of your hair. Clip this section over your head. It is preferable that you clip it to the side as this will make it easier for you to work on the lower layer of your hair.
Start curling the bottom layer. For this, you should section the hair into small segments. Then, hold one section and wrap the top section of the hair around the curling iron, moving downwards. Curling inwards or away from the face is a decision that would have to be taken by you. After wrapping the hair close to the scalp around the curling iron, leave it so for around 20 seconds. Then, loosen your grip on the iron and pull it downwards. Repeat this process for rest of the sections of the lower layer of your hair.
While you can use a little bit of hairspray at this point to make the curls stay, do not use too much yet. Just spray lightly. Also, make it certain that the segments you make are approximately equal in terms width as this will give a better look to your curled hair.
When the lower layer is done, move on to the middle layer and repeat the whole process. Divide your hair into sections, take one section at a time, and curl it. When a section is done, spray it lightly and continue with the next section. The top layer needs to be done the last, and you need to ensure that in each layer, the direction of the curler should be top to bottom.
Once you have curled your hair, you can make use of your hands and comb to position it as you want. Once you have set your hair the way you want, you can use the hairspray to the maximum. Be generous this time around. You will now have bouncy, loose and large curls that will give a lively look to your appearance. You would not have to worry about the curls coming off anytime soon if you have followed the steps exactly.
The natural way
If you like to curl your hair frequently like me, you would not be able to use a curler every time as that could be detrimental for your hair. Thus, you have to take a more natural route by using t-shirt strips.
Take an old t-shirt and cut it into strips. The number of strips you make should be enough to cover your hair. Keep the size of the strips a few inches longer than your hair. You can also use any other cotton fabric for this purpose. If you like tight curls, the strips should be narrow, while for loose and large curls, you would have to keep the strips wide.
This process needs to be done after you have washed your hair and they are still wet. Do not use the conditioner if you want to get maximum results.
Start the process by separating your hair into sections. Take a section and comb it smoothly. Line up the strip with the tip of the section. Roll your hair into the strip gradually and when you reach the scalp, tie the end of the strip so that it would stay in place. Repeat the process with the rest of the sections.
If you want the overall look to be tousled, you can attain that by rolling the strips in different directions. If you are looking for the half-curled look, tie the strip when you are half way up your hair instead of going all the way to the scalp. Allow your hair to dry completely and then remove the strips. Use hairspray for a long-lasting effect.
It wasn’t that hard was it? If you do it a couple of times you will get better at it and you can start experimenting with the methods to get an even funkier look. Be it the natural way or using a curler these methods will give you amazing curls and a great new look. Don’t just read them – go try them out !
